Guides to Tough Conversations

Guides to Tough Conversations

As a parent, you likely feel responsible to talk to your child about some really tough topics but may not know how or even when to begin. Issues like bullying, mental health, drugs and alcohol, their changing bodies, appropriate technology and difficult questions about faith can be tough to navigate. While the conversation will likely involve moments that are uncomfortable, sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.

These resources for tough topics are meant to guide your conversation, but you know your child better than anyone. Use these resources to make the most of the ongoing conversations with your child and to better understand them in the stage and phase they are in today.

See below for the topics of conversation.

Topics

Bullying

Bullying is defined by unwanted or repetitive behavior that is intended to cause physical or emotional harm. This may be physical, verbal or social. Bullying can happen anywhere – in every school, community, and church.

Confidence + Self-Worth

Confidence and understanding of our self-worth are important from the time we are born until we die. Many children struggle with their own value, and how to be confident, especially while dealing with changing bodies, insecurities, bullying, and more.

Crisis

A child in each age and stage will respond differently when they are in crisis. What they need from you as a parent is to know they are safe, cared for, loved and that they will be okay. Identify when your child is in crisis and how you can help at every age and stage.

Divorce

You likely don’t want to think about this being a reality, talking to your kids about divorce. There are so many questions to answer – how do we parent together through a divorce? Where do we go from here? How do we co-parent? How am I going to survive this? Will the kids ever be okay?

Drugs + Alcohol

This is a conversation no parent wants to have… or likely even think about. It can be a tough conversation to begin and may seem like if we don’t talk about it, we might not have to deal with it. As your kids get older, they see drugs and alcohol in movies/tv, music, at school, and maybe even in their social circles. Addiction is very present in our culture today.

Health

Your child’s body is changing quickly in preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school. At different stages it can be hard for them, or for you, to understand what they need. Check out these guides for how to talk to your child about their changing body and what they need from you at each stage.

Mental Health

Mental health can be an intimidating piece of parenting to navigate. It includes children’s mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being and affects how children think, feel, and act. It also plays a role in how children handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.

Money

Teaching our children about money and finances may not be something we often think about, but they are learning just by watching. From the time they are in elementary school, they are developing a concept of money, finances, and how that world works.

Technology

Can your preschooler already take selfies, and swipe to find what they want to on your phone? Does your elementary schooler play endless games on their tablet? Is your middle schooler engrossed in YouTube videos and TikTok? Does your high schooler have their own phone?
