A Memorial Day Prayer
May 22, 2018
My memories of Memorial Day as a young child are tied to a ‘bonus’ day off from school, a cheery parade with hundreds of people on Baldwin Street and a pool party with my closest cousins.
Over the years, I’ve become more sentimental about this American holiday that honors men and women who died while serving our country. Much like your heart, mine too is filled with gratitude for those who courageously gave their lives, for those who bravely fight today, and for the families who are sacrificing even now while their loved ones are absent from the home. It seems appropriate to offer a prayer, would you join me?
As we remember the sacrifices our servicemen and women have made and continue to make for the freedoms we daily enjoy, we ask for your blessing upon them. Lord, may your grace and protection cover each person who is currently serving our country and may divine wisdom be generously given to our leaders.
We pray that you would bring comfort, peace, and strength to the families who have sent their loved ones far from home and are sacrificing so much for the cause of freedom for all. May they feel our love, support, and appreciation.
We also remember the soldiers who have deep wounds, be it emotionally and/or physically. Those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and physical limitations that serve as a daily reminder of what they endured in combat. May your grace and peace be theirs in abundance and where healing is needed, we pray to you, our Great Physician, to heal and restore.
Thank you for the gift of freedom that we ultimately have in your Son, Jesus- who gave His life so that we may live. In His words, “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life down for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) Amen!
